VLAN - Virtual Local Area Network - Used to segregate network traffic / data such that devices on different VLANs appear as though they are on totally different physical connections. This enables a single piece of equipment (network switch) to be used to support different networks. Applications such as business centres, multi-tenanted buildings, differing security regimes, separation of applications (i.e. VOIP & LAN data) are all examples of where VLANs can be used.
Layer 2 - Layer 2 of the ISO 7 layer model is commonly used to describe 'flat' broadcast networks, where all packets are bridged / switched around the network. This layer includes STP (Spanning Tree Protocol), VLANs and physical connectivity. Most small networks comprising a few switches don't need to worry too much about this area and are essentially 'plug and play', whilst in larger networks Layer 2 connectivity defines the physical data paths used and needs to be considered when designing resilience, quality of service and the virtualisation of networks.
802.1x - An authentication protocol that can be used in both wired and wireless networks to control user access to networks, typically via the back-end integration to a Radius server. This protocol is available on most managed network switches and access points and can be further integrated in to Microsoft Active Directory and ensures that no user has physical connectivity to the network without authenticating using their Windows domain login.
