TUTORIAL
VIRTUAL
PRIVATE NETWORKS
Traditionally,
multiple site organizations that want to communicate with each other
have connected via leased-line or ISDN dial-up from each remote
site - both of them can be expensive options, especially where there
are many locations. More and more organizations are setting up Virtual
Private Networks, which enable communication across the very cheap
public net-work that is the Internet.
A Virtual
Private Network is a private network that is configured within a
public network. These have been around for years, built over public
networks like BT, for private customer networks, but today there
is tremendous interest in VPNs over the Internet. With the right
hardware & software, secure communication becomes possible and
additional benefits of simple set up, reduced cost and easy administration
are making VPNs the 1st choice for wide area connectivity.
VIRTUAL
PRIVATE NETWORKS - USES
These include:
Remote Access - remote or mobile users
can now connect via VPN client software to the company network.
This eliminates the high costs of long distance access calls and
the internal modem banks necessary to receive them. The savings
can be significant.
Intranet
- Main and branch office locations can use always on connections
to the Internet, through the establishment of secure 'tunnells'.
Because this type of connection is fast and easy to establish, Intranet
VPNs make it easy and affordable to provide all employees with full
access to the company network, regardless of the size, number or
location of its remote offices
Extranet
- Connect a company with its customers, suppliers, and other business
partners, providing them with limited access to specific portions
of the company network for purposes of collaboration and coordination.
Access methods may include both dial up and persistent connections,
but all access is subject to rigorous user identification and authorization
controls. A major appeal of extranet VPNs is the ease and speed
with which secure communications can be extended to new partners,
even for temporary, per-project alliances.
VIRTUAL
PRIVATE NETWORKS - HOW IT WORKS
VPN networks are built around secure tunnels, established
over the Internet between VPN devices. To secure a tunneled transmission
against interception and tampering, all traffic over a VPN is typically
encrypted for safety.
IP SECurity
is the security protocol that provides authentication and encryption
over the VPN tunnels. Designed for the IP protocol, it has wide
industry support and is the standard for VPNs on the Internet.
VIRTUAL
PRIVATE NETWORKS - BENEFITS

to main office LAN
- Reduced set-up cost, compared to traditional
Wide Area Networks
- Low cost of ownership, including fast reconfiguration
- Simple set-up & easy to administer
